Eriogonum grande var. rubescens, commonly known as red buckwheat or southern California buckwheat, is a captivating perennial shrub endemic to the southwestern United States. Its distinctive clusters of tiny, pink to reddish flowers bloom from spring through summer, drawing in pollinators with their intricate beauty. This drought-resistant plant exhibits grayish-green leaves and a compact growth habit, making it well-suited to arid landscapes. It serves a vital role in local ecosystems by providing nectar for native insects and acting as a food source for wildlife. Additionally, some Indigenous communities historically used parts of the plant. With its adaptability, ecological value, and cultural significance, Eriogonum grande var. rubescens stands as a testament to the interconnectedness of nature and human interaction. Zones 8-11

Germination

Eriogonum grande var. rubescens, commonly known as Red Buckwheat, can be germinated from seeds with specific care. Begin by preparing a well-draining seed-starting mix, using a combination of sand, perlite, and a light potting mix. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil, gently pressing them into the medium without covering, as they require light for germination. Provide consistent moisture to the soil by misting or using a gentle spray, and maintain a temperature between 18-24 degrees Celsius (64-75 degrees Fahrenheit) for optimal germination. Consider using a plastic cover or placing the seed tray in a plastic bag to create a humid environment. Germination may take several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots with well-draining soil. Acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions gradually before transplanting them into a sunny garden spot with well-drained soil. Eriogonum grande var. rubescens is a drought-tolerant plant, so once established, it requires minimal watering and well-drained soil for optimal growth.

2 years later and it’s still going!
Color: Cyan NylonFish, Color: Cyan NylonFish
I have 2 dogs, a 6lb chihuahua (Lolli) and an almost 100lb German shepherd/Belgian Malinois (Uzi). Got this for Uzi, however, Lolli had other plans for it. She literally took it out her mouth and ran to hide it. It’s been over a year, closer to 2 and it’s still hanging on. Attached a photo of Lolli…

Best found
Color: Cyan NylonFish
I have a heavy heavy chewer, the only things that has escaped him were items like "kong" solid and rubber but no squeaky. He quickly lost interest in the toy; largely within a week at most and never picks it up again unless really bored. Squeaky toys had a life shelf of a week at best, that is with us taking them away to "preserve" them for longer. So far, this toy, the fish, has been the longest surviving squeaky and the longest at keeping his interest. it has received some cosmetic damage, but nothing that would make you remove the toy from his possession and it STILL squeaks.

Still holding up to my super-chewer!
Color: Cyan NylonFish, Color: Cyan NylonFish
It's a very good product. I would recommend this toy for a heavy chewing dog. My main reasons it's not 5 stars, it's HEAVY and the eyes peeled right off. My pup really likes to throw his toys around, this thing sounds like a cannon ball that's going to go through our floor! He also tries to destroy everything so he was chewing on the eyes and he would have definitely eaten them if I wasn't paying attention. It's not a horrible thing but I obviously don't want him to eat non food things. My dog also likes the squeaker in it, but it's difficult for me to get it to squeak. That's not a big deal though just thought I should mention it. Overall especially for the price, it's a good sturdy product that's cute and it's still holding up. He's chewed parts of the softer areas off a bit, but the rest is very hard so he hasn't made much of a dent. It's also about as big as his head, so he's pretty happy with it!

Worth it if your dog destroys plush toys & likes to chew
Color: Cyan NylonFish
My dog is a very big chewer and destroyer of toys. This toy is perfect for her. It is durable and keeps her engaged chewing for a while. I have a 55lb dog, considered a large dog, and it’s a great size for her. She’s unable to break it apart. The ends do tend to get a little sharp after extended use

My Boston loves this fish toy
Color: Cyan NylonFish
Very durable. It takes a couple of months of intense chewing to make holes in this toy. My Boston has incredible mouth strength so he destroys most toys in minutes unless they are rocks. I have replaced this fish 2 times in the last year. I keep an eye on the wear and replace it when he makes a hole in it. Worthwhile purchase but monitor the dogs chewing.
